I'm 50, live in Austin, Texas but am a Northern California native and my heart still belongs there. I spend a lot of my time quilting, cooking, reading and working on my house. I've been keeping track for about ten years of all the books that I read. I had been writing comments but life got in the way and I need to start doing that again.

New Mercies by Sandra Dallas

This is the third book I've read by this author this year, her most recent book, Prayers for Sale, I read a few months ago and before that Tallgrass. New Mercies was published in 2005 and I am slowly going to work my way back through her novels. Sandra Dallas lives in Colorado and most of her characters do also, writing what you know is a good idea. All of her books that I have read so far have been set back in the first half of the 20th century or earlier. I believe they are true to their time periods and I've enjoyed them all a great deal. Her female characters are generally strong women who have had extraordinary things happen to them. Prayers for Sale was set after the Civil War and a very young war widow ends up in a rough mining town in Colorado and befriends an 87 year old widow. Tallgrass is written from the eyes of a teenage girl in Colorado who has a WWII Japanese internment camp set up next to her family farm. New Mercies is about a divorcee in the 1930's who finds out that she has an aunt she never knew about who leaves her a plantation in Mississippi. I'm looking forward to the next novel going backwards in her body of work.

Also, to all my quilting friends, quilting is mentioned in everyone of the books.
